Overwatch Viewership Dips

The Overwatch League is on Stage 4 and viewership is declining.

Day 2 of Stage 4 has the least amount of views with an average of 63,000. Stage 3 wasn’t super entertaining but did pick up during the playoffs with 133,000 views. Stage 4 starts with 113,000 views through Twitch, a 15.2% drop from Stage 3. There isn’t a certain answer for why viewership declined however it started with New York Excelsior dominating the other teams.

Today the London Spitfire take on the San Francisco Shock,
the LA Gladiators vs Florida Mayhem & Philly Fusion vs Shanghai Dragons

BAM 10, Battle Arena Melbourne, is a masters for the Tekken World Tour. A few notable Tekken professional players showed up like ROX|Knee, Uyu|Jeondding and FOX|Saint. A note worthy match is Knee & Saint’s, who were in the grand finals. Saint made it out of Losers’ Finals and fought a good fight but couldn’t beat Knee.

They are called Royal Never Give Up for a reason! They are the new Mid Season Invitational LoL champs. Sunday morning in Paris, South Korea’s Kingzone DragonX went up against China’s RNG and takes the L. The odds were always in RNG’s favor. DragonX did a bit of gambling in the first three games which gave RNG the advantage from jump. RNG capitalized and take the MSI Champion title.

Fornite’s Competitive Mode was OK

Fornite’s Competitive Mode was OK

As esports gains more traction there are going to be more rules and scrutiny like underage gambling and drug abuse. Mind you, when I came across this info I’m thinking, ‘OH NO! METH?!?!’ I feel like we all know people in the Fighting Game Community or any competitive esports player that smoke weed or inhale edibles, hopefully not the whole thing in one sitting. The drug that is being referred to is Adderall. Some of the players are taking Adderall as a prescription but is it giving the players an unfair advantage? And what type of law are they going to pass that allows these players to take their meds and play professionally? There doesn’t seem to be a clear line. Instead of baseball and steroids we’re talking video games and Adderall.
As far as gambling goes, it’s more talk about loot boxes, skins for characters and guns from gamers under 21. Not to say that I’m for buying loot boxes, pay-to-play or pay-to-win but I’ve been saying ‘bet’ since I knew what it meant and what it could make people do. There needs to be regulations from companies for sure about the way they present loot boxes to its consumers. I haven’t met anyone addicted to buying lootcrates; but, I think that term addicted may apply to the person who spent $500 on Smite. It’s a fine line between dedication, favorite game and addiction. If you have something that you love, then yes induldge in it and it aint tricking if you got it.

$1.2 million goes Mobile Esports game
Gamelynx raised over $1.2million to create team based mobile esports games.

Gamelynx is a game development studio established in 2016 by a former dev of League of Legends with their first title releasing later this year.

There are many people backing this movement like Y Combinator, Skycatcher Fund, M Venture and Riot Games. This effort of creating an esports mobile game has been attempted in the past but failed because the games were similar to other games readily available on PC or console. Yesterday in my piece about mobile esports on the rise I mentioned mobile gaming broadening the competitive gaming community’s demographic. I believe that the games that were made for esports on mobile may have failed to bring in a different demographic. There are few people who will have a game on PC/Console and then want to turn around and put it on their phone. I’m not saying it hasn’t been done but, it is a bit much. According to CEO of Gamelynx, Alexander Mistakidis, they are given the technology needed to succeed in making a good mobile esports game.

As the line between mobile and PC/console continues to blur, the portability and accessibility of mobile creates an even brighter future for competitive gaming and esports,” said Mistakidis.

Thankful I get another opportunity to snag the Pajama Mei Skin that I just missed in the Retribution event and the Mercy Witch Skin from the original Junkentstein’s Revenge. I am hoping we see a really nice skin for Pharah because she’s always seemingly shortchanged when it comes to elaborate skins. Which skins from previous events are you keeping an eye out for?
